If you are a business owner in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal, Mississauga, Winnipeg or Halifax, the first thing to know is this. There is no single Seo cost in Canada.
For many Canadian businesses, ongoing SEO falls somewhere around $1,000 to $5,000 CAD per month. Local campaigns can start below that range. National ecommerce and highly competitive campaigns can reach $10,000 or more each month.
The monthly fee alone does not tell you whether an SEO proposal is good value. Two companies can charge $2,500 per month and deliver very different amounts of research, technical work, content, local optimization and implementation. That difference is what this guide explains.

A practical 2026 view of Canadian SEO pricing looks like this.
| Service Type | Typical SEO Cost |
|---|---|
| Basic local SEO | $500 to $1,500 CAD per month |
| Small business growth SEO | $1,500 to $3,000 CAD per month |
| Competitive regional SEO | $3,000 to $5,000 CAD per month |
| National SEO | $3,000 to $10,000+ CAD per month |
| Enterprise SEO | $5,000 to $15,000+ CAD per month |
| One time SEO project | $1,000 to $10,000+ CAD |
| SEO consulting | $75 to $200+ per hour |
These are market ranges, not an official price list. Clutch reports that SEO agencies commonly charge between $2,000 and $20,000 per month, with many agencies charging $100 to $149 per hour.
Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and found that 79.1 percent serving the United States and Canada charged at least $1,001 per month. Its broader survey found an average retainer of $2,917, though this figure is not Canada only.
Canada’s business market explains why one price cannot fit everyone. As of December 2024, Canada had about 1.10 million employer businesses, and 98.2 percent were classified as small businesses. Ontario had 410,154 small businesses, Quebec had 228,622, British Columbia had 170,512 and Alberta had 137,182, according to government data. A roofing company serving one part of Calgary does not need the same SEO work as an ecommerce company selling thousands of products nationally.

Monthly SEO retainers are the most common model. You pay an agreed amount each month for a defined scope, which may include technical improvements, keyword research, content, internal linking, local SEO, authority work and reporting. Ahrefs found 78.2 percent of providers used monthly retainers. The weakness is vague retainers that describe activities without deliverables. “SEO optimization” is not useful on its own. A better scope names the actual work, such as researching a set number of commercial queries, optimizing specific service pages, fixing identified indexing issues and publishing a set number of well researched articles. That gives the business owner something they can check. Working with an SEO expert in Canada who puts this scope in writing is a good starting point.
One time SEO projects suit a defined piece of work such as a technical SEO audit, a migration review, keyword research, content strategy, local SEO setup, an ecommerce structure review or recovery from a visibility problem. This can also be a sensible starting point for a company that does not yet know what is wrong with its site.
Hourly SEO consulting suits businesses that already have an internal team and need specialist direction. Ahrefs found $75 to $100 per hour most common, with 66.7 percent of US and Canada respondents charging $75 to $200 per hour. Clutch’s data shows many firms charging $100 to $149 per hour, with Canadian providers also appearing in higher ranges. (Source)
Performance and hybrid pricing combines a fixed fee with incentives tied to qualified leads or another agreed measure. This needs careful contract wording, since rankings alone are a poor payment trigger because they can move for reasons outside the provider’s control.
The business model matters more than the package label. A plumber in Mississauga, a dentist in Vancouver, a roofer in Calgary or a lawyer in Toronto may need Google Business Profile work, local keyword research, service and location pages, review guidance, technical SEO and conversion tracking. A realistic range for these local service businesses is $500 to $1,500 per month, and more in competitive markets.
A business with sites in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal faces a different problem, since each location may need its own landing page, local information and business data. Quebec can add French language requirements, which increases research, content and management work.
Ecommerce SEO often requires more work because hundreds or thousands of product and category pages create a larger technical system, covering category structure, product page optimization, internal linking, indexation control, faceted navigation, structured data and conversion analysis. A 40 product Shopify store is not the same project as one with 4,000 products.
National SEO targets compete with more websites and usually need more content, authority and technical resources than a narrow local target like “HVAC company Calgary.” Enterprise SEO businesses may have thousands of URLs, multiple teams, several locations and strict approval processes, which pushes pricing to $10,000 or more per month to reflect the work, risk and coordination involved.
A useful way to compare pricing is to ask what the money buys. Under $1,000 per month generally covers basic local work, audits, selected page improvements and consulting. Between $1,000 and $2,500 covers local SEO, technical work, content and ongoing optimization for a small site. Between $2,500 and $5,000 covers broader technical work, content production, regional growth and authority work. From $5,000 to $10,000 or more covers national SEO, ecommerce SEO, competitive industries and larger sites. Above $10,000 typically means enterprise SEO work, large ecommerce sites, national competition and complex technical programs.
These ranges are not shopping prices. A $2,000 budget spent mostly on reports can produce less value than a $2,500 budget spent fixing technical problems, improving commercial pages, creating content and tracking leads. Compare work completed, not just the invoice.
An SEO audit may cost a few hundred dollars for a small site, or several thousand for a large complex one, depending on the number of pages, technical systems and problems reviewed. A good audit tells you which problems matter and what to do next, rather than just listing errors.
Local SEO can include Google Business Profile optimization, service area research, local pages, review guidance and citations. A single location is manageable, while thirty locations need a much larger system.
Technical SEO covers crawling, indexing, canonical URLs, redirects, site architecture, internal links, mobile performance, structured data and JavaScript rendering. Price rises when developers are needed or the site has thousands of URLs.
SEO content pricing depends on research depth, subject difficulty, writer expertise and whether it connects to a real search and conversion strategy. Five well researched pages targeting real commercial opportunities beat 30 generic articles.
Link acquisition should never be judged by link count alone. Ask where the links will come from, why that publication would link to the business, whether the linking website is relevant and whether the link is earned through useful material or simply purchased in bulk. Cheap bulk link packages carry more risk than value.
Competition plays a large role, since a niche local phrase is easier than a national commercial query, and a Toronto law firm, a Vancouver real estate company and a Calgary contractor all face different competitive environments. Website size and condition matter too, as a clean 30 page site is easier to work on than a 10,000 page store with indexing problems. Geographic coverage adds cost, since one city costs less to target than multiple provinces or the whole country, and each genuine location needs its own content and local search work.
Content requirements shift the price as well. Strong existing pages need refinement, while a near empty site needs a larger publishing program. Implementation is one of the most overlooked factors, so ask whether the provider makes the changes or just sends recommendations, since a $2,000 plan requiring client implementation is not equal to one where the SEO team handles it. Bilingual requirements also add cost, since serving English and French audiences needs research and content in both languages, which can add substantially to the workload.
A freelancer usually has lower overhead and suits small businesses and focused projects, though capacity is limited. A consultant charges a higher specialist rate and suits strategy audits and difficult problems, but may not handle every task. An SEO agency works on a monthly or project fee and suits businesses needing several SEO skills, though overhead is higher. An in house hire costs salary plus tools and benefits, suits larger ongoing programs, but hiring takes time and management.
Ahrefs found agencies charge considerably more than freelancers on average, since an agency provides several people across technical SEO, content, design and account management. Clutch’s Canadian listings show a broad range of agency sizes and prices. The cheapest option is not automatically best. A consultant may be enough if you already have developers and writers, while an SEO agency may offer better coverage if nobody internally can handle technical SEO, content and measurement.
| Option | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Small businesses and focused projects | Lower overhead and cost | Limited capacity and skill coverage |
| SEO Consultant | SEO strategy, audits and difficult problems | Specialist expertise | May not handle every SEO task |
| SEO Agency | Businesses needing several SEO skills | Broader team and service coverage | Higher overhead and fees |
| In House SEO | Larger businesses with ongoing SEO needs | Direct control and internal knowledge | Salary, benefits, tools and management costs |
Before signing, ask for a monthly scope covering keyword research, technical SEO, on page improvements, content creation, internal linking, local SEO, authority work, reporting, analytics and implementation. Also ask what is excluded, since website development, professional photography, paid advertising, extra content and premium SEO software are often billed separately. These items can turn a $2,000 monthly SEO proposal into a much larger real marketing cost.
The monthly SEO fee is not always the complete budget. Watch for these common gaps:
Ask for the total expected marketing cost, not just the SEO retainer.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA )states that GST or HST depends on the type of supply and where it is considered made, with place of supply rules applying to services, including those supplied electronically.
| Province | Rate |
|---|---|
| Alberta | 5% GST |
| British Columbia | 5% GST |
| Quebec | 5% GST |
| Saskatchewan | 5% GST |
| Manitoba | 5% GST |
| Ontario | 13% HST |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST |
| New Brunswick | 15% HST |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% HST |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% HST |
A $2,500 SEO fee is not necessarily a $2,500 invoice. At 13 percent HST the tax is $325, for a total of $2,825. At 5 percent GST the tax is $125, for a total of $2,625. Treatment can vary by transaction, so confirm your situation with the CRA or a tax professional.
Do not compare proposals by price alone. Put each SEO agency side by side across the monthly fee, technical work, content, local SEO, link work, implementation, reporting, contract length, cancellation terms and tax. Then ask what they will do during the first 30 days, which pages they will improve, who implements technical changes, how much content they will produce, how leads and sales will be measured, and what happens if you cancel. Vague answers make the price comparison meaningless.

A low price is not automatically bad. A small business may not need a $5,000 campaign. The problem is a low price paired with poor work. Watch for these warning signs:
Google warns site owners to evaluate SEO advice carefully, since no legitimate provider can guarantee a specific ranking. See our guide on choosing the right SEO companies in Canada for more.
A useful example comes from Softcrust’s case study involving a Canada based limo service. The client originally had no SEO presence, no social media strategy, no Google Ads and no lead tracking. Softcrust built local SEO pages, content around booking intent, a social media plan and Google Ads with conversion tracking, scaling ad spend from $100 to over $1,000 CAD daily. Softcrust reports cost per sale fell by 45 percent as bookings came in through SEO, paid search and social.
This case matters because the business wanted bookings, not just rankings. Softcrust also reports a 45 percent average reduction in cost per sale across accounts in 2024 and 2025, which is a company reported metric rather than an independent benchmark. A case study shows what happened in one account, not a guarantee for every business.
SEO is worth paying for when search demand exists, margins are healthy and the work ties to revenue. Suppose a $2,500 monthly campaign generates 30 additional qualified leads a month, and 20 percent convert. That is six new customers, and at $800 gross profit each, that is an additional $4,800 in gross profit. This does not prove SEO caused every sale, since attribution needs proper tracking, but it gives you a way to judge the investment. A better measurement system looks at organic visibility, qualified visits, calls or forms, customers and revenue, since rankings alone are diagnostic and not the final result.
Statistics Canada reported that 89 percent of Canadian businesses had a web presence in 2021, and 46 percent used SEO as a form of paid online advertising. Small businesses employed 5.8 million people in 2024, which is 46.6 percent of the private sector workforce.
SEO may be a poor investment when nobody searches for the product or service, the business has poor customer retention, the profit per sale is too low, the website cannot convert visitors, the company cannot wait for organic growth, the business is closing or changing models, paid search suits urgent demand better, or the market is too small for organic opportunity. A downtown Toronto restaurant may benefit from local search, while a product nobody searches for may need demand creation through social or paid channels first. SEO should follow the business model, not the other way around.
AI Overviews and AI Mode changed how people find information, but did not create a separate Google requirement called “AI SEO.” Some businesses are being sold expensive packages claiming they need special technical files to appear in AI search.
Google’s documentation says existing SEO foundations remain relevant, with no additional technical requirements for eligibility, since the page still needs to be indexed and eligible for normal Search.Google’s guidance on generative AI search confirms these systems rely on existing ranking and retrieval methods, and SEO fundamentals still matter.
An agency should not charge extra just for calling something GEO, AEO or LLM SEO. The real question is what work they are doing. Useful work includes improving page clarity, answering specific customer questions, strengthening internal links, improving structured data, building authority, improving local business information and creating original, referenceable material. Google recommends useful original content over special AI tricks, and confirms there is no special schema requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
If an agency charges extra for “AI visibility,” ask what they will actually deliver. This should include improved commercial pages, original research, useful question and answer sections, stronger internal linking, better author information, structured data, visibility tracking and testing whether AI traffic produces business value. Google confirms AI feature traffic is included in Search Console’s performance reporting, which gives you a direct way to monitor results.
A Semrush study of over 200,000 keywords found AI Overview queries tend to have higher zero click rates, though this may reflect the informational nature of those searches rather than proving AI Overviews caused it.
The practical lesson is simple. Do not build a program around chasing an AI box. Build pages that answer real questions, demonstrate expertise, support claims with evidence and make the business easy to understand for both search systems and people.
For many small businesses, $1,000 to $2,500 per month Seo cost is a reasonable range to investigate, though not every business needs to spend that much. A new site with one service area may start with an audit, keyword research and focused page improvements, while businesses competing across Toronto or Vancouver, or serving several cities, may need more. Base the budget on the opportunity by asking how much a new customer is worth, how many customers organic search can realistically produce, what the competition looks like, what work the site needs and how much the company can invest before seeing results.
Many small and medium businesses see monthly proposals between $1,000 and $5,000 CAD. Basic local work costs less, while competitive national or enterprise programs cost considerably more.
Market data commonly places consulting and agency work around $75 to $200 or more per hour. Ahrefs found this range covers 66.7 percent of US and Canada respondents. Specialist consultants and larger agencies can charge more.
A basic local SEO campaign runs around $500 to $1,500 per month. Competitive markets, multiple locations and larger service areas can require $2,000 or more.
It can fund limited work, but is unlikely to cover technical SEO, new pages, content production, local SEO, authority work and ongoing implementation together. Ask exactly what the $500 buys.
A clear scope covering the work that matters to your business, which may include technical SEO, keyword research, content, internal links, local SEO, authority work and reporting.
Only if there is genuinely additional work. There is no special Google technical requirement for AI Overviews that automatically justifies a separate fee, since Google confirms existing SEO best practices remain relevant.
The right question is not what is the cheapest SEO package in Canada. Ask instead what work your business needs, what it will cost and how you will know it is producing business value. A local Calgary company may need Google Business Profile work and local authority, while a Vancouver ecommerce brand may need technical SEO and category architecture. A Toronto law firm may need stronger content and authority, a Quebec business may need French language content, and a national company operates at a different scale entirely.
There is no universal SEO price because there is no universal SEO problem. The best proposal connects the Canadian search market, your website, your customers, the work being performed and the revenue you want to generate.
